Convicted Boko Haram member Alkali Yarima has been handed a death sentence by the Federal High Court in Abuja over the 2015 Maiduguri attacks.
Justice James Omotosho also sentenced Yarima, a.k.a. La’ari, to life imprisonment for receiving arms training and handed him additional prison terms of 35 years, 30 years, and multiple 10-year sentences for other terrorism-related offences.
The court held that Yarima was a member of Boko Haram between 2009 and 2015 and participated in the group’s activities, including receiving training abroad on weapons handling in preparation for attacks.
It ruled that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt under the Terrorism (Prevention Amendment) Act, 2013.
The charges were filed by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo, while the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, said the ruling reflects government’s resolve to combat terrorism.
The judgement marks another conviction in ongoing trials linked to Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East.
