The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, NIHSA, has warned that 17 states may experience flooding between July 21 and July 27, 2026.
In its latest National Flood Advisory, Alert No. NFA-2026-200, the agency classified the affected areas as being under medium flood risk, warning of possible localized flooding along major river channels and floodplains.
Director General of NIHSA, Arc. Umar Mohammed, said rising water levels have been detected at key monitoring stations across the country, with 16 gauging stations recording levels above their watch and warning thresholds.
He said communities located near waterways and flood-prone areas face an increased risk of inundation, urging residents and authorities to take early precautionary measures.
The affected states include Bauchi, Edo, Imo, Kaduna, Plateau, Benue, and 11 others.
NIHSA advised state governments, emergency agencies, and local authorities to activate flood response plans, including the relocation of vulnerable residents from floodplains and the pre-positioning of relief materials such as food, medical supplies, and clean water.
The agency also urged communities to keep drainage channels, culverts, and waterways clear, while warning residents against attempting to cross flooded roads, bridges, or fast-moving water.
