“Zootopia 2” has broken box office records to become Walt Disney Animation Studios’ highest grossing animated film of all time, overtaking 2019’s “Frozen 2”, the company announced on Wednesday.
The animated sequel has generated about $1.46 billion in global ticket sales, making it the fifth Walt Disney Animation Studios release to surpass the $1 billion mark worldwide. Its performance has stood out during a period when the global box office remains below pre pandemic levels.
A major driver of the film’s success has been its exceptional reception in China, where “Zootopia 2” has grossed more than $560 million. The sequel dominated its opening weekend in the country, accounting for roughly 95% of all movie ticket sales.
The film also launched Hollywood’s crucial holiday season strongly, earning an estimated $556 million globally during its opening weekend, including the US Thanksgiving period.
“Zootopia 2” reunites rabbit police officer Judy Hopps and her fox partner Nick Wilde in a new adventure set in the bustling animal metropolis, drawing large audiences across multiple markets.
With cinema revenues still trailing 2019 highs, the film’s performance has offered a significant boost to Walt Disney Animation Studios and cinema operators relying on strong attendance during the year’s second busiest moviegoing season.
