Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) after what he described as extensive consultations with stakeholders, political leaders, elders and supporters across the state.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Director General of Media and Communication in the Governor’s Office, Nuhu Anka, who said the decision followed careful consideration and was taken in the overriding interest of stability, progress and the sustainable development of Zamfara State.
According to the statement, the governor has decided to formally defect from the Peoples Democratic Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress after evaluating the prevailing political situation within his former party.
It said the decision came after wide consultations with political stakeholders and supporters across the state, particularly in light of the prolonged internal crisis, leadership disagreements and unresolved structural challenges currently affecting the PDP at both the national and state levels.
The statement explained that the final deliberation leading to the decision took place at the Government House in Gusau. The meeting was held under the coordination and leadership of the Deputy Governor and was attended by senior government officials as well as key political stakeholders in the state.
During the deliberations, participants reportedly reviewed the political situation within the PDP and assessed the implications of the party’s internal disagreements for governance and political stability in Zamfara.
Governor Lawal, according to the statement, acknowledged the role the PDP played in his political career and appreciated the support he received from the party and its members.
However, the statement noted that the current political realities and the lingering crisis within the party made it necessary for the governor to take what was described as a bold decision in the interest of good governance and the future development of Zamfara State.
The statement added that the governor believes the move will help strengthen political stability and support the administration’s development objectives for the state going forward.
