Former Manchester City stalwart Pablo Zabaleta has voiced his support for a potential reunion between Lionel Messi and FC Barcelona, suggesting the Inter Miami talisman should conclude his professional journey with the reigning LaLiga champions. Speculation regarding a homecoming for the Argentine icon has remained a persistent narrative in the football world, gaining significant traction following the re-election of Joan Laporta as the club’s presiding official.
The historic ties between the player and the Catalan giants were severed in 2021 when contractual complications and financial constraints prevented a renewal at the Camp Nou, leading to Messi’s high-profile move to Paris Saint-Germain. After a two-year stint with the French heavyweights, the veteran forward opted for a new chapter in Major League Soccer, signing with Inter Miami in 2023.
While discussing the prospect of a final stint in Spain, Zabaleta shared his insights with Flashscore, acknowledging that Messi’s recent career choices were influenced by factors extending beyond the field of play. He noted the lifestyle benefits of Florida for the forward’s family and the competitive success he has already found stateside.
Regarding the possibility of a sentimental return to the Blaugrana, Zabaleta expressed a strong desire to see a “last dance” for his former international teammate.
“There’s been so much talk about that, especially with the presidential elections at the club.
“He went to PSG, then decided on Inter Miami, and I think at that stage of a career, sometimes you are looking for more than just football.
“Miami is a wonderful place to raise a family, Inter Miami was a new and exciting project, and wherever Messi goes, he wins. He’s already won the MLS Cup.
“As for a return to Barcelona – why not? A last dance? I’d love to see it,” he said.
