Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede has publicly criticised Pastor Femi Lazarus over comments he made about women’s menstrual experiences, describing them as insensitive and dismissive.
In a sermon that has drawn widespread backlash online, the pastor claimed that women’s mood swings during menstruation are caused by “attitude” rather than biological factors.
“You are not the first woman to see your period, so your menstruation is not the problem. I have never seen anywhere in the Bible any woman complain about menstrual pain. You are simply not a peaceful person,” Lazarus said in the viral clip.
The statement sparked outrage on social media, with many Nigerians accusing the pastor of downplaying the physical and emotional realities of women’s menstrual cycles.
Reacting to the viral sermon, Jegede urged men, especially public figures, to be more empathetic and refrain from making uninformed remarks about issues they have not personally experienced.
“Yesterday I saw a trending video of a clergyman seemingly trivialising menstrual pain,” she wrote. “If you’ve never experienced the hormonal changes that women go through during their periods, ovulations and pregnancy, please don’t make bold statements about things you haven’t experienced. Men, please be kind.”
Jegede’s response has been widely praised by social media users, many of whom commended her for speaking up in defense of women and challenging stereotypes surrounding menstrual health.
