Award-winning singer Yemi Alade has opened up about an unusual phase in her early career, revealing that she claimed to be 22 years old for three consecutive years due to her intense focus on music and isolation from the outside world.
The Johnny crooner explained that when she first entered the music industry, she realised that many of her colleagues were not particularly welcoming. As a result, she chose to keep to herself, working closely only with her team and directing all her energy toward building her career.
According to Alade, her deep immersion in work made her lose track of time, leading her to repeatedly state she was 22 years old when she was actually 25.
She noted that her priority at the time was growth, discipline, and musical excellence, not socialising or keeping up appearances.
The singer also revealed that she avoids attending events or parties unless formally invited, explaining that she keeps a very small circle and does not consider herself someone with many friends.
In addition, Alade spoke briefly about a period during her university days when she struggled with cigarette smoking. She said she eventually quit after realising the habit was negatively affecting her health and vocal performance.
Reflecting on her journey, the singer described those experiences as formative, helping her develop focus, resilience, and self-awareness in an industry that can be both demanding and isolating.
Yemi Alade remains one of Africa’s most successful female artists, with a career defined by consistency, discipline, and global recognition.
