Nigerian music star Yemi Alade has spoken candidly about overcoming a brief smoking habit she developed during her university years, revealing that the experience negatively impacted her voice and lifestyle.
In an interview with Chude Jideonwo, the Johnny crooner disclosed that she began smoking as a teenager but soon realized it wasn’t a habit she wanted to continue.
“When I was in the university, I tried smoking. It didn’t work out,” Alade said. “But before it didn’t work out, it worked out a bit too much. I started needing to smoke before going to bed. I was getting addicted to that lifestyle.”
The singer admitted that although she was becoming dependent on cigarettes, she often hid it from the public because she wasn’t proud of the habit. That internal conflict eventually led her to quit.
“I told myself that if I have to hide to do something, then I shouldn’t be doing it,” she explained. “I like being aware of my environment and my decisions, so I decided cigarettes were not for me.”
Alade added that smoking affected her voice, making it easier for her to walk away from the addiction.
“They harmed me; they affected my voice. So I stopped. Smoking for me didn’t last up to a year,” she said.
The award-winning artist’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of self-awareness and the courage to make healthier choices, even in the face of early temptations.
