Yannick Bolasie, formerly of the Premier League, has voiced strong disapproval regarding the performances of Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi during Arsenal’s recent 2-1 stumble against AFC Bournemouth. The retired winger contended that the Gunners’ midfield duo adopted an excessively cautious tactical approach, contrasting sharply with goalkeeper David Raya, who appeared to shoulder more significant distributional risks.
Utilizing social media to voice his frustrations, Bolasie highlighted a tactical imbalance where the defensive unit and goalkeeper were more involved in possession than the team’s creative outlets. He argued that modern football’s obsession with completion percentages is masking a lack of progressive intent on the pitch.
“All comes from Raya dancing on the ball like he has all game. When your back line is touching the ball more than any offensive players it’s a big problem, dead stats people get rated for these days,” Bolasie posted on X.
The match data provided a statistical foundation for his critique; Raya registered 49 pass attempts with 38 finding their target, nearly matching or exceeding the volume of his midfielders. Rice completed 43 of 50 passes, while Zubimendi managed 29 completions from 38 attempts. Most telling was Kai Havertz’s limited involvement, recording only 17 successful passes out of 22.
Bolasie suggested that these high completion rates are a byproduct of risk-aversion rather than technical superiority.
“Of course your pass rates gonna be 95% if you’re always passing backwards and side to side, same way wingers who don’t lose the ball aren’t trying to take on the full backs….safety first,” he remarked. “Raya passing the ball more than Declan Rice or Zubimendi is the strange thing about football today, the players with the least attacking ability touching and passing the most.”
The repercussions of the loss at the Vitality Stadium are significant for the title race. Arsenal failed to capitalize on an opportunity to move 12 points clear of Manchester City. Although they still lead by nine points, the defending champions possess two games in hand and will travel to face the Gunners next week in a fixture that could dramatically shift the momentum of the season.
