The German Innovation Institute for Sustainability and Digitalization recently recognised Xsabo Group for its role in fostering development in the Uganda’s solar sector.
The recognition comes at a time when the group is continuing to expand its footprint in grid-connected solar power. Currently, the Xsabo Group operates two grid-connected solar power plants in Uganda.
The Kabulasoke plant in Gomba district, which was commissioned in 2019, sits on 131 acres of land, with an investment of more than $20 million and generates about 20MW. The group was given a 21-year generation concession.
Walter Muhindo, the site manager of the Kabulasoke plant, said the solar plant operates consistently throughout the year, with power output varying according to weather conditions but generally meeting projected targets.
“Our average daily generation aligns with our design expectations based on Uganda’s solar irradiance,” he added, noting that remote monitoring systems allow engineers to track generation in real time and quickly respond to any technical issues to ensure stable supply to the grid.
Last year in March, the second grid-connected solar plant was commissioned in Nkonge, Mubende district, generating 20MW. David Alobo, the founder and managing director of Xsabo Group, noted that the award is homage to those who have supported the company.
He said “the award will enhance the visibility of the Xsabo brand for partners, customers and future generations while consolidating the motivation and long-term loyalty of staff and other stakeholders.”
Alobo revealed their expansion plans to develop additional grid- scale solar power plants in other districts such as Lira, Soroti, Kasese and Adjumani. He said the proposed projects are at different stages of planning, with feasibility studies and regulatory processes underway.
“So far, we have delivered 40MW to the national grid, but our ambition is to scale up significantly,” he said.
“In Lira, we are targeting up to 50MW, while Soroti and Kasese are expected to add between 20MW and 30MW, subject to approval by the Electricity Regulatory Authority.”
The group is also negotiating a power purchase agreement for a proposed 30MW solar plant in Adjumani.
