Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has officially confirmed that Kylian Mbappé will serve as the club’s primary penalty taker moving forward.
Alonso made the announcement during his pre-match press conference ahead of Real Madrid’s UEFA Champions League showdown against Liverpool on Tuesday night at Anfield.
“Who takes penalties? We decide who will take them, it’s Kylian,” Alonso told reporters. “Then, the players make the decisions. Tomorrow, the first taker is Mbappé.”
Mbappé, who joined Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) last year, has quickly become one of the standout performers for the Los Blancos this season.
The France national team captain, aged 26, has continued his prolific form in Spain after topping the scoring charts in both LaLiga and across European competitions last season.
With Alonso’s confirmation, Mbappé is now expected to take charge of spot-kick duties for Real Madrid as they prepare to face Liverpool in one of the most anticipated fixtures of the Champions League group stage.
