The ministry of Works and Transport has officially launched the Road Safety Week 2025.
At the event which took place at Namanve Motor Vehicle Inspection Centre on December 18, Barbara Namugambe, who represented the minister for Works and Transport, emphasised that vehicle safety is a shared responsibility, requiring cooperation among government institutions, fleet owners, operators, and the general public.
This year’s theme is “Safe Vehicles for a Safer Uganda,” which underscores government’s commitment to reducing road crashes by addressing one of their critical causes; unsafe and poorly maintained vehicles.
The launch also sets the tone for a nationwide campaign aimed at improving safety on Uganda’s roads through enhanced vehicle conditions.
As part of the launch activities, stakeholders were taken through a practical demonstration of the forthcoming Motor Vehicle Inspection (MVI) exercise, providing first-hand insight into how inspections will be conducted once the programme is fully rolled out.
The ministry has made preparations to operationalise mandatory vehicle inspections, beginning with government vehicles as a way to set the standard for compliance, accountability, and roadworthiness before extending inspections to the wider public.
The Road Safety Week, held annually, runs with a series of engagements, awareness activities, and stakeholder outreaches across the country, reinforcing safety on highways.
