Award-winning singer Wizkid has stirred fresh controversy after claiming he had “no blueprint” on his path to global fame. The statement, featured in his HBO documentary Long Live Lagos, has drawn criticism from fans who believe it downplays the influence of Banky W and the EME label that introduced him to the mainstream.
“There was no blueprint for me. I had to build a structure for myself,” Wizkid said in the documentary.
The comment immediately triggered pushback, with some observers arguing that it diminishes both Banky W’s role and the legacies of Nigerian music pioneers who helped shape the industry.
Although Wizkid acknowledged the impact of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, calling him instrumental to his belief in making music, his “no blueprint” claim has fueled divided reactions online.
Actor Franko Nero accused the singer of ingratitude, recalling how Banky W publicly introduced Wizkid early in his career. Another user, Arhcent, echoed similar concerns, saying the singer appeared to be rewriting history by overlooking the support he received from EME.
Others offered a different interpretation. The Duke of Isoko argued that Wizkid’s comment reflected his originality, noting that the star rose with a distinctive sound and style.
Another commentator, Sir Dickson, urged critics to remain calm, suggesting that Wizkid was referring to the evolution of his music rather than denying Banky W’s contribution.
The debate continues to dominate social media, highlighting the long-running conversation around credit, mentorship, and artistic individuality in Nigeria’s music scene.
