Afrobeats superstar Wizkid and Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti have continued their heated exchange over comparisons with the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti, with Seun releasing a fresh video response on January 21, 2026, following Wizkid’s controversial social media posts.
The dispute, which has dominated social media for days, centres on repeated comparisons between Wizkid and Fela Kuti by Wizkid’s fanbase, known as Wizkid FC. Seun Kuti, Fela’s son, has consistently argued that such comparisons are disrespectful, insisting that his father’s legacy goes beyond music to political activism and cultural resistance.
Tensions escalated on January 20, 2026, when Wizkid took to X to respond angrily to sustained criticism and online attacks, including comments directed at his family and fanbase. In one post, the singer wrote, “Everyday Wizkid! I f*** ur ugly wife?…”
He also dismissed the comparison with Fela, posting, “Fela fight for freedom this fool dey fight fc!….” before adding in another tweet, “Ok everybody better pass Wizkid! Can we all sleep now?”
The remarks drew widespread backlash, particularly the personal attack on Seun Kuti’s wife, which many social media users described as crossing the line.
Reacting on January 21, Seun Kuti released a video addressing Wizkid directly, condemning the involvement of women and children in the dispute. Seun said, “All real men know one thing, you never involve women and children in a fight. For you to be talking about my wife is ugly… what does she have to do with this? Senseless.”
He further accused Wizkid’s fans of harassing his child online, saying, “Insulting my kid, all your fans on my kid’s page… you’re destroyers. But those kinds of things can’t break me.”
In the same video, Seun said he would not shield his daughter from public criticism, adding that he wanted her to grow strong from the experience. “I want my daughter to experience what I experienced so she can be strong like me. Make una dey talk am more, so she can see Nigerians,” he said.
Seun also addressed Wizkid’s tattoo of Fela on his arm, issuing a stern warning in Yoruba, translated into English, He said he should remove the tattoo, adding that he should instead replace it with the image of his own father if he is proud of him.
The dispute began earlier in January when Seun criticised Wizkid FC for likening Wizkid to Fela, arguing that his father’s influence as a revolutionary figure and activist should not be reduced to fan arguments or commercial success.
Before Wizkid’s response, Seun had released videos calling Wizkid FC “ignorant” and accusing them of attempting to “steal” Fela’s image. He said, “It’s an insult to Fela to call Wizkid the new Fela.”
Following the exchange, public opinion has remained divided. While some fans defended Wizkid for standing up for himself and his supporters, others criticised him for dragging Seun’s wife into the dispute and insisted that Fela Kuti’s legacy should be kept separate from celebrity feuds.
The episode has once again reopened a long-running generational debate in Nigerian music, contrasting Fela Kuti’s political and revolutionary legacy with Wizkid’s global commercial success, a discussion that continues to polarise fans across social media.
