Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, is determined to make his second appearance at the FIFA World Cup as Nigeria prepares for the 2026 edition.
Troost-Ekong made his World Cup debut at just 23 during the 2018 tournament in Russia and is the only member of the current squad with prior World Cup experience. The centre-back has also represented Nigeria at the Olympics.
With Nigeria having missed the Qatar 2022 World Cup, the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by Mexico, Canada, and the United States, could be Troost-Ekong’s final opportunity to play on football’s biggest stage.
“Playing at the World Cup for the second time would be a dream,” Troost-Ekong told Olympics.com. “In 2018, I fulfilled my childhood dream at just 23. Now, with more experience and maturity, I’m ready to lead this exciting generation of talent and go beyond what we achieved before.”
The Al-Kholood defender will captain the Super Eagles when they face Gabon in the playoff semi-final in Rabat, Morocco, on Thursday.
