Newly appointed Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has declared himself ready for the “huge responsibility” of leading the national team. Following the retirement of William Troost-Ekong on December 4, 2025, the Beşiktaş midfielder was officially named the team’s new leader last week.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference in Fès, Morocco, on Monday, Ndidi dismissed suggestions that the armband would bring added pressure. Instead, he credited his predecessor for preparing him for the role.
“I’ve been here learning from the former captain Troost-Ekong, so there’s no pressure at all. It is a huge role, but I think with the help of the players, everything will go smoothly. I have had conversations with a couple of the older players to make them understand the reason why we are here.”
A Historic Debut for the New Leader
Tonight’s match marks a significant personal milestone for Ndidi, who missed the 2023 AFCON due to injury. Leading the team out at the Complexe Sportif de Fès against Tanzania represents his first competitive match as the official permanent captain.
Ndidi’s Leadership Track Record:
-
First Cap: 2015 (at age 18)
-
AFCON Experience: 3rd Place (2019), Round of 16 (2021)
-
Current Form: Has been a mainstay for Beşiktaş this season, recording the highest tackle-success rate in the Turkish Süper Lig.
