The world’s largest free online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, has reached a major milestone, turning 25 years old as one of the most visited and trusted information platforms on the internet.
The Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit organization behind Wikipedia, is commemorating the milestone with a global campaign that reflects on the platform’s journey and honors the volunteers who sustain it. As part of the celebration, the Foundation has released its first video docuseries, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the lives of volunteer editors from around the world.
Wikimedia Foundation CEO, Maryana Iskander, described Wikipedia as a “digital wonder of the world”, emphasizing that its success is rooted in the dedication of its volunteer community.
To further mark the anniversary, the Wikimedia Foundation has launched a “25 Years of Wikipedia” digital time capsule, featuring reflections from founder Jimmy Wales and moments that shaped the platform’s history. Wikipedia also invited the public to explore its future through an interactive experience imagining how the platform may evolve.
After 25 years, Wikipedia remains the only nonprofit-run website among the world’s top ten most visited. With more than 65 million articles in over 300 languages and nearly 15 billion monthly views, it continues to power search engines, AI tools and digital platforms across the internet.
The Wikimedia Foundation says its focus remains on supporting human contributors, strengthening trust, and ensuring free access to knowledge for generations to come.
