The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed deep sorrow over the killing of Somtochukwu Maduagwu, a 29-year-old anchor with Arise News, vowing that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.
Maduagwu, fondly known as “Sommie,” was killed during an armed robbery at her residence in Katampe, Abuja, in the early hours of Monday.
In a condolence message released Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike commiserated with the management and staff of Arise News, describing Maduagwu’s death as “a painful loss not just to the media industry, but to the entire nation.”
“I feel deeply pained that such a bright and wonderful soul could be cut down in her prime. It is truly sad,” Wike said.
He assured that security agencies had already commenced investigations, emphasizing that the police will leave no stone unturned in tracking down and prosecuting those behind the killing.
According to a preliminary report from the FCTA’s Mandate Secretary for Health, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, Maduagwu was brought to Maitama General Hospital dead at about 4:30 a.m. on Monday. The hospital is expected to provide a medical report to aid police investigations.
Wike further prayed for the repose of Maduagwu’s soul and offered condolences to her family, colleagues, and friends, including Arise News Chairman, Prince Nduka Obaigbena.
“It is my prayer that God, in His infinite mercies, will grant her eternal rest and give her family, loved ones, and the Arise News family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” he said.
