The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed surprise over being listed as a potential witness by Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in his ongoing terrorism trial.
Speaking during his monthly media chat in Abuja, Wike said he had no prior knowledge of being included in Kanu’s list of witnesses, emphasizing that he would only appear in court if officially summoned.
“If you see Nnamdi Kanu, ask him why he listed me. I never volunteered to be a witness,” Wike said. “Nobody has served me any process or subpoena. So because I saw my name listed somewhere, I should start running? No, that’s not how it works.”
The former Rivers State governor stressed that while he respects judicial processes, he will not respond to mere media reports or speculations.
“If I am subpoenaed to appear and give evidence, I will obey the court and attend. But until then, I can’t be a witness in the newspapers,” he added.
Kanu, who is facing terrorism-related charges before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja, recently submitted a list of witnesses he intends to call in his defence — a list that reportedly includes the FCT Minister.
Wike, however, maintained that his inclusion remains a mystery to him.
“He who listed me should explain why. But if I’m invited by the court, go home and sleep — I’ll be there,” he said with characteristic confidence.
