Amid circulating reports of his arrest in France and defections within the Rivers State Assembly, FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has denied all rumours and reaffirmed his loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaking after inspecting road projects in Abuja, Wike attributed the defection of the Rivers State House of Assembly Speaker and 15 other lawmakers to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to deep divisions within the PDP.
He stressed that he has no intention of leaving the PDP.
“It is unfortunate. I have always said everybody has the right to make a choice. The party is fully factionalised. And the Constitution allows members to leave when a party is divided.
“I am still in the PDP. Not everyone has left. Out of 27 members, 16 or 17 have gone. We still have a good number, about 10, and we will continue to work together”, he said
Wike urged the PDP leadership to address the internal crisis urgently, “At the end of the day, if you don’t put your house in order, it is the party that loses. Those who left are free, but those who remain will continue to work together.”
On the arrest rumours, he dismissed them as politically motivated, “People will try to distract you, but if you stay focused, you will not be perturbed. Last time they said I was sick and flown overseas. This time, they claimed I was arrested in France. I am doing my job.”
He concluded by emphasizing that his priority remains performance and public service, “As long as the President is satisfied with my work, critics will talk. But steady performance and delivering results will always speak louder than rumours or falsehoods”, he said.
