Fresh efforts to resolve the political crisis in Rivers State were made over the weekend as President Bola Tinubu convened a meeting with key stakeholders from the state.
The closed-door talks, held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, brought together Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his predecessor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and leaders of the Rivers State House of Assembly amid ongoing political tensions.
Speaking later in Abuja, Wike confirmed the meeting and said the president intervened to restore calm after months of instability triggered by disagreements between the executive arm and the state legislature.
He described President Tinubu’s involvement as a peace-driven effort, noting that the president appealed to all parties to prioritise stability and governance in the oil-producing state.
The meeting marked the fourth time the president has stepped in to address the crisis, which has featured repeated impeachment threats against Governor Fubara and deep divisions within the House of Assembly.
Wike expressed optimism that the latest intervention would bring lasting peace, adding that he has urged lawmakers to respect the president’s decisions. However, details of the resolutions reached at the meeting were not disclosed.
