In 2017, the late Raila Odinga contested the presidency under the National Super Alliance (NASA), his fourth attempt at the country’s top seat. Months earlier, the former prime minister had offered the NASA candidacy to former Bomet Governor Isaac Rutto, who had just joined the coalition through his Chama Cha Mashinani outfit. His entry completed the second wave of NASA’s ‘Pentagon’.
At the time, Rutto’s inclusion provided NASA with a strategic foothold in the Rift Valley, particularly in the South Rift region, then considered a CCM stronghold.
