Efforts to improve border governance in West Africa have intensified as the Director-General of the National Boundary Commission (NBC), Adamu Adaji, and other regional boundary officials meet in Côte d’Ivoire to strengthen cooperation on border management across the sub-region.
The NBC disclosed this in a statement on Friday, noting that Adaji represented Nigeria at a regional meeting of the Platform for the Exchange and Coordination of Border Area Management in West Africa (PECOBOM), held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
At the meeting, Adaji participated in a panel discussion on experience sharing and best practices in cross-border cooperation, where he highlighted Nigeria’s over four decades of involvement in regional border collaboration.
According to the commission, Nigeria’s experience was widely recognised and commended by participants, with the engagement also providing an opportunity to deepen partnerships with regional stakeholders working to improve border governance and stability.
PECOBOM serves as a key regional platform for coordinating border area management and enhancing cooperation across West Africa.
The Minister of Integration in Côte d’Ivoire, Adama Dosso, who declared the meeting open, emphasised the historical complexities of African borders and the need for stronger coordination to address emerging security challenges.
During the technical sessions, participants reviewed key frameworks, including the Regional Cooperation Charter on Border Governance and an Administrative Procedures Manual aimed at improving cross-border operations.
