Werder Bremen head coach Horst Steffen has expressed frustration with Victor Boniface for failing to follow instructions during their 3-0 loss to SC Freiburg on Saturday.
Boniface, making his first home appearance at the Weserstadion, came on in the second half with Bremen already trailing 2-0. Despite his introduction, the Super Eagles striker could not spark a comeback as the visitors sealed all three points.
Steffen blamed the team’s lack of defensive discipline and singled out Boniface for drifting out of position.
“I felt he was too ‘everywhere.’ It’s fine for him to be more central. It wasn’t the way I wanted it,” Steffen told Transfermarkt.
“It wasn’t just him, but a lot of players weren’t staying in their spaces. We have to be positionally consistent so that we can overload the attack every now and then. That’s an issue I’ll address.”
Boniface, who joined Bremen late in the summer transfer window, has played just 45 minutes across two appearances. Steffen urged patience, insisting the Nigerian striker must adapt to the team’s tactical demands.
