The Minister of Finance and President of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, Mr. Wale Edun, has formally extended his sympathies to world boxing icon Anthony Joshua and the families of two individuals killed in a tragic crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
In an official statement released on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, Edun characterized the former heavyweight champion as a vital national asset and confirmed that the entire sporting community is united in prayer for his physical and emotional recovery. The minister emphasized the profound sorrow felt by the federation following the loss of two close associates of the boxing star during the high-speed collision.
“On behalf of the entire Nigerian boxing family, I express my deepest condolences to our national treasure, Anthony Joshua, and the families of the two individuals who passed away. The loss of life is always deeply distressing, and our thoughts and prayers are with you, Anthony, and the affected families at this difficult time,” Edun stated. “As a boxing community, we pray for your speedy recovery and that the souls of the dearly departed rest in peace.’’
The fatal incident occurred at approximately 11:00 a.m. on Monday in the Makun area of Ogun State, specifically near the Danco Filling Station. A Lexus SUV carrying the 35-year-old boxer and three other passengers reportedly struck a stationary truck after the driver lost control during an overtaking maneuver.
While the impact claimed two lives at the scene, both the Ogun and Lagos State governments have confirmed that Joshua remains in stable condition. He is currently receiving specialized care at a premier medical facility in Lagos, where a comprehensive team of clinicians continues to monitor his progress.
Joshua arrived in Nigeria just days ago to engage in various community and sporting initiatives following his high-profile sixth-round knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami on December 19. The two-time unified champion, who maintains strong ancestral ties to Sagamu, had intended to spend the holiday season connecting with fans and supporting local boxing development.
Authorities from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) continue to investigate the crash, citing excessive speed as a potential factor in the tragedy that has stunned the global boxing fraternity.
