The technical lead of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, Rena Wakama, has signaled that the squad is fully prepared to compete in the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament. Following their arrival in Villeurbanne, Lyon, on Monday, the reigning continental champions have transitioned into the final phase of their tactical buildup, having already finalized the twelve-woman roster set to represent the nation in this high-stakes qualifying series.
The Nigerian side is scheduled to commence their competitive journey this Wednesday with a critical opening fixture against Colombia. This match serves as the first hurdle in a demanding schedule that will see the D’Tigress also face off against diverse international opponents, including the host nation France, alongside South Korea, the Philippines, and Germany.
Speaking to the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) media regarding the strategic importance of the event, Wakama emphasized that the tournament serves as a vital benchmark for her players. She views the upcoming clashes as a definitive way to measure the team’s progress against global elite standards.
“Our preparations have been intense, and this tournament here in Lyon, is an important part of that process. It gives us the opportunity to test ourselves against strong competition and evaluate where we’re as a team,” Wakama told the NBBF media.
With the 12-player contingent now settling into their French base, the focus remains on maintaining the momentum that has seen them dominate African basketball. As the tournament gets underway, the coaching staff will be looking for clinical execution of their refined strategies to ensure Nigeria secures its place on the world stage once again.
