Nigerian singer Aituaje Iruobe, popularly known as Waje, has dismissed long-standing rumours suggesting she once dated rapper M.I Abaga.
The speculation began after the pair released a string of romantic collaborations in the 2010s, including their fan-favourite hit One Naira. Many fans believed their on-screen chemistry mirrored a real-life romance.
However, speaking on a recent episode of The Honest Bunch podcast, the 45-year-old music star clarified that their connection was purely professional and creative.
“Because of the rollout and romantic theme of my collaborative song with M.I, One Naira, a lot of people speculated that we were dating. But we never dated,” Waje said. “We were just friends who saw how great a love story in a song could be, so we created characters that would help drive the story.”
The singer also revealed that M.I’s then-girlfriend was the one who voiced a part of the song, not her, a detail many fans were unaware of.
“His then-girlfriend was even the one who did the voice-over, not me,” she added.
Waje further stated that she is currently single, emphasizing that she would not consider dating a man who isn’t financially stable. According to her, she’s past the phase of “building with a man” and now values emotional intelligence, faith, and success in a partner.
Her candid remarks have reignited online conversations about her music legacy, creative chemistry with M.I, and the personal standards she upholds in relationships.
