In a significant shift for African women’s football, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced the postponement of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). Originally slated to commence on March 17, 2026, in Morocco, the tournament has been rescheduled to a new window running from July 25 to August 16, 2026. The decision, reached following high-level consultations between CAF, FIFA, and various stakeholders, aims to ensure the commercial and organizational success of the continent’s premier women’s competition amidst a congested sporting calendar.
While CAF’s official statement attributed the delay to “unforeseen circumstances,” internal reports suggest that the host nation, Morocco, faced significant logistical hurdles. The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) reportedly indicated that the intense demand on the country’s stadia and infrastructure—exacerbated by a busy March schedule featuring domestic league fixtures and high-profile international friendlies—made a spring kickoff untenable. By moving the event to July, organizers hope to provide a cleaner window that avoids overlap with these existing commitments.
“The event, scheduled to start on the 17th of March in Morocco, will now take place from the 25th of July to ensure the success of the tournament. CAF did not give reasons for the postponement other than saying it was due to unforeseen circumstances.”
The postponement also follows a period of heightened tension between the governing body and the host nation. Friction mounted in the wake of the 2025 Men’s Africa Cup of Nations final held in Rabat earlier this year, which saw Morocco lose to Senegal in a match defined by late-game pandemonium. The chaotic scenes—including a 20-minute delay after Senegalese players walked off the pitch in protest of a penalty—resulted in substantial sanctions. CAF imposed fines exceeding $1.1 million across both federations and issued multiple match bans, a move Morocco has described as “disproportionate” and is currently appealing.
