Voting has officially commenced in the Anambra State governorship election, with residents heading to the polls to choose the state’s next leader.
The exercise began around 8:30 am across all 21 local government areas after officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) deployed election materials to polling units early in the morning.
By 7:00 am, INEC personnel and security operatives were already on the ground, setting up polling stations and preparing for the day’s activities.
Shops remained shut and major roads were deserted as the state observed a near-total lockdown for the election.
In several neighborhoods, youths took advantage of the empty streets, turning them into makeshift football pitches.
Security presence was visibly heightened. The popular Onitsha Bridge was completely cordoned off, with no vehicular or pedestrian movement allowed.
Helicopters patrolled the skies as security agencies worked to ensure a peaceful and orderly process.
A total of 16 candidates are vying for the governorship seat, while more than two million registered voters are expected to cast their ballots.
