The Nigeria Super Eagles have officially undergone a significant leadership restructuring ahead of their 2025 AFCON opener against Tanzania. Following the sudden retirement of long-serving captain William Troost-Ekong on December 4, head coach Éric Chelle has confirmed a new hierarchy designed to lead the team in Morocco.
Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen has been appointed as the team’s main assistant captain, serving as the primary deputy to the newly appointed captain, Wilfred Ndidi. In addition to his leadership role, Osimhen has officially taken over from Troost-Ekong as the Super Eagles’ designated penalty taker.
The New Leadership Hierarchy
While seniority (caps and years of service) traditionally dictates the captaincy in the Nigerian national team, the technical crew opted for a blend of experience and “vocal influence” for this tournament:
| Role | Player | Club | Context |
| Captain | Wilfred Ndidi | Beşiktaş | Officially named leader last week; has 70+ caps. |
| 1st Assistant | Victor Osimhen | Galatasaray | Chosen for his “whole-hearted commitment” and outspoken nature. |
| Vice-Captain | Alex Iwobi | Fulham | The team’s most capped active player (91 caps). |
| Vice-Captain | Moses Simon | Paris FC | A veteran of nearly 10 years and 86+ caps. |
