Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface has shared insights into his experience with the Nigerian national football team, admitting that his international goal record has not met his expectations but reaffirming his full commitment to the Super Eagles.
In a candid discussion with sports journalist Oma Akatugba on Thursday, the 24-year-old forward acknowledged the divided opinions surrounding his performances for Nigeria. Despite the criticism, he expressed pride and gratitude for fulfilling his childhood dream of donning the iconic green and white jersey.
Boniface emphasized that his dedication to the national team has never been in question, even amid challenges converting opportunities on the pitch.
“I have been unlucky with the national team in terms of scoring goals, even though there were a couple of games where I was not good,” Boniface said.
“My biggest dream as a football player was to represent my country, and I achieved this, and I am grateful for this. Because it has not worked well for me with the national team does not mean I am a bad player.”
Turning to his club career, the Bundesliga star addressed the recent transfer window speculation linking him to AC Milan, saying he has no regrets about how events unfolded.
“When the Milan deal didn’t go through, I was just relaxing with my friends. Things like that happen in football all the time,” he said, reflecting on the experience with calm assurance. “I love Germany. I really do.”
Boniface continues to be a key figure for Bayer Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga and remains hopeful that his breakthrough moment with the Super Eagles of Nigeria will soon arrive.
