Vice President, Kashim Shettima, is representing President Bola Tinubu at the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day ceremony in Abuja, as the President attends the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in the United Arab Emirates.
The Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, organised annually by the Ministry of Defence, honours members of the Armed Forces who lost their lives in service to the nation.
The ceremony pays tribute to personnel who died during the First and Second World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, peace support operations, and various internal security engagements, including the ongoing fight against terrorism.
In addition to remembering the fallen, the event recognises living veterans and highlights the need for sustained financial and moral support for wounded service members and the families of fallen heroes.
While remembrance ceremonies are observed globally, Nigeria’s commemoration reflects its unique history. As a Commonwealth nation, the country initially marked Remembrance Day on November 11 in line with other member states, before adopting January 15 to coincide with the end of the Nigerian Civil War.
The Nigerian Government has reiterated its appreciation of its Armed Forces and called on citizens, organisations, and the private sector to continue supporting service personnel, particularly the wounded and the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice, during the remembrance period and beyond.
