Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the inauguration of Guinea’s President Mamadi Doumbouya in Conakry.
Following the ceremony, he is scheduled to attend the 56th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.
The announcement was made in a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communications.
The inauguration is set for Saturday, January 18, at the GLC Stadium in Nongo, Conakry. Shettima’s participation underscores Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening regional leadership, deepening economic partnerships, and advancing global economic integration under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The visit also highlights Nigeria’s leadership role within ECOWAS and its support for Guinea’s return to constitutional order after a four-year political transition.
“Beyond diplomatic solidarity, the trip aims to enhance bilateral trade, which has recently grown, with Nigerian exports to Guinea — particularly manufactured goods and agricultural products — reaching $3.29 million,” the statement added.
Doumbouya, a former colonel in Guinea’s special forces, led a military coup in September 2021 that toppled President Alpha Condé, who had controversially amended the constitution to seek a third term.
Following the coup, Guinea faced suspension from ECOWAS and the African Union, with sanctions imposed and regional leaders demanding a swift return to civilian governance.
Shettima’s engagements in Conakry and Davos signal Nigeria’s dual focus on fostering regional stability and enhancing its presence in global economic discourse.
