Veteran journalist and former master of ceremonies during the Mwai Kibaki era, Sammy Lui Wang’ondu, has died.
Lui, who was once a popular broadcaster with the then Voice of Kenya — now the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) — died on Thursday afternoon at his home in Subukia, Nakuru County.
According to police in Subukia, the veteran MC was found dead on a seat in his house.
“He was found dead, while on a chair, by a farmhand who was working on the farm,” said a police officer familiar with the incident.
Neighbours said Lui had been unwell and was living alone near the Subukia Marian National Shrine, after relocating from Nairobi.
“He lived alone after shifting from the city. Some of his close relatives are in Kenya, while others live abroad,” said a neighbour.
Lui, who once worked with the East African Breweries, was well-known for his eloquence, humour, and charm that lit up national functions during President Mwai Kibaki’s administration.
Former director of the Presidential Press Service Lee Njiru said he had received calls from former colleagues confirming the broadcaster’s death.
Subukia MCA Isabella Makori said the body had been moved to Umash Funeral Home in Nakuru.
“This afternoon I received the sad news of the passing of Lui,” she said.
More details are expected as family and friends make burial arrangements.
