Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk says the Reds will not abandon their Premier League title ambitions despite Sunday’s 3–0 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
The Dutch defender insisted that Liverpool remain “ready for a big fight”, warning Arsenal and other title contenders that Arne Slot’s side is determined to stay in the race.
The match, which marked Pep Guardiola’s 1000th game as a manager, saw Erling Haaland open the scoring for City. Liverpool thought they had levelled before half-time, but Van Dijk’s header was disallowed for offside.
Nico Gonzalez struck City’s second on the stroke of half-time, before Jeremy Doku sealed the victory with a third.
The defeat drops Liverpool to eighth place on the Premier League table, while Manchester City move up to second.
Speaking after the loss, Van Dijk urged calm and focus within the squad.
“It’s about finding consistency and carrying on. Now we go to our countries, stay fit and be ready for a big run after,” he said.
“We are not going to give up whatsoever. We are in November and we are ready for a long season and a big fight.”
