Former Big Brother Naija star Uriel Oputa has spoken out against the growing trend of using serious health conditions as content, warning that such behaviour undermines the gravity of life-threatening illnesses.
Her comments come amid backlash surrounding content creator Blessing Okoro, who recently claimed she is battling stage 4 breast cancer, a statement that has sparked widespread debate online, with some questioning its authenticity.
Reacting to the development, Oputa described the situation as troubling, stressing that illnesses like breast cancer should never be trivialised for attention or engagement. She urged individuals to approach such topics with care and respect, especially for those genuinely affected.
Drawing from personal experience, the reality star revealed that her mother is a breast cancer survivor, making the issue deeply personal. She emphasised that cancer is not a subject for entertainment, noting that it carries real-life consequences for patients and their families.
Oputa also raised concerns about the lack of clarity in the public claim, pointing out that referencing “stage 4” without proper context could mislead audiences and diminish the seriousness of the condition.
While she maintained that anyone facing such a diagnosis deserves compassion and support, she cautioned against the spread of unverified information. At the same time, she condemned the wave of online hostility directed at Okoro, insisting that no individual should face abuse over such sensitive matters.
Highlighting the global impact of the disease, Oputa referenced data from the World Health Organization, noting that cancer remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide, accounting for millions of fatalities each year.
She concluded by urging greater responsibility in online spaces, calling on content creators and the public alike to treat serious health issues with the respect they deserve.
