Police in the Kiira region have recovered the body of Gershom Rwakasanga, an operations manager at the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC), who drowned on Saturday evening at Busowoko Resort Beach in Butagaya sub-county, Jinja district.
According to Abdullah Suuta, the resort’s general manager, Rwakasanga arrived at the site at around 5:30 pm with his daughter for an outing. The two reportedly hired three tour guides and took photos along the scenic falls before Rwakasanga proceeded to the water massage point, a deep, slippery section of the river located between sharp rocks.
Suuta said the deceased is believed to have slipped and fallen into the water, possibly hitting his head on the rocks and losing consciousness. His body became trapped between the rocks, complicating early rescue efforts.
The resort, which maintains a team of 20 standby divers, had 10 on duty at the time of the incident around 6:30 pm. They immediately called the police marine unit for backup, but searches that night proved unsuccessful.
Kiira Regional police spokesperson James Mubi said the joint marine team resumed the search on Sunday morning, working alongside local divers. The body was eventually recovered around 12:30 p.m., wedged between rocks. Mubi confirmed that Rwakasanga’s body was taken to Jinja regional referral hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
