The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) has dismissed as false and misleading a viral video circulating on social media alleging that some of its students were arrested for links to the Boko Haram insurgency.
Reacting to the development, the management of the university described the video as misinformation capable of inciting fear, panic and misunderstanding among members of the public, stressing that the claims did not emanate from any recognised security or government authority.
In a statement released on Tuesday in Maiduguri, the Registrar of the university, Ahmad Lawan, said thorough internal checks confirmed that no student of the institution is under investigation or detention for involvement in terrorist activities.
He emphasised that UNIMAID maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards extremism, violence and all forms of criminality, noting that the institution has consistently partnered with security agencies and community stakeholders to promote peace and stability in the North-East.
According to the statement, the university remains a centre of learning populated by responsible, disciplined students whose primary focus is academic excellence and personal development, not criminal or extremist activities.
The management warned against the spread of unverified and sensational information, urging social media users, media organisations, parents and guardians to rely only on credible and official sources for information concerning the institution.
UNIMAID also reassured the public of its continued commitment to moral discipline, national unity and the production of graduates who contribute positively to society, while calling for calm and responsible information sharing.
