Britain’s foreign intelligence agency, MI6, has launched a covert “dark web portal” designed to recruit spies across Russia and beyond, offering potential informants a secure way to share sensitive information.
The new platform, called “Silent Courier,” provides a discreet communication channel for individuals with intelligence relating to terrorism, espionage, or hostile state activity.
Access instructions have been posted on MI6’s verified YouTube channel, underscoring the agency’s growing reliance on digital innovation in espionage.
“Our virtual door is open to you,” declared outgoing MI6 chief Richard Moore as he announced the portal, inviting would-be informants to take advantage of the new tool.
The service advises users to access the portal via the Tor browser for maximum anonymity, and to use devices and accounts unconnected to their real identities. For those in countries where Tor is restricted, the agency recommends using VPNs. Instructions and guidance are available in multiple languages to reach a global audience.
UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said the initiative reflects a proactive shift in intelligence strategy: “As threats multiply and the world becomes more complex, we must ensure Britain stays one step ahead of our adversaries. With this technology, MI6 can now reach and recruit new sources of intelligence—whether in Russia or anywhere else in the world.”
The move comes amid rising tensions with Moscow. Moore recently revealed that MI6 had uncovered a “staggeringly reckless campaign of Russian sabotage” across Europe, intensifying concerns over the Kremlin’s shadow war against the West amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
