The Embassy of Ukraine in Nigeria has appealed for voluntary financial contributions from the international community, friends of Ukraine, and advocates of peace for the advancement of a special robotic initiative called “Allies of Steel.” This project aims to deploy cutting-edge robots designed to evacuate wounded soldiers from the frontlines of conflict.
During a charity fundraising event held in Abuja over the weekend, Ukrainian Ambassador Ivan Kholostenko emphasized the significance of this initiative. He noted that the robots will not only assist in evacuating injured personnel but will also be utilized for delivering food, ammunition, and clearing mines in perilous combat zones.
“Tonight, we are raising funds for a remarkable project called ‘Allies of Steel’,” Amb. Kholostenko stated. “These ground robots are essential for saving lives on the battlefield. Every contribution, no matter how small, has the potential to save a Ukrainian defender’s life. Even one dollar can make a difference.”
As a gesture of gratitude, every donor will receive a small token symbolizing friendship and solidarity between nations, reinforcing the bond amid struggles for peace.
Ambassador Kholostenko further expressed that despite the geographical distance, Ukraine and Africa share common struggles and aspirations for freedom. “Our hearts, struggles, and hopes are intertwined, even if we are separated by land.”
He extended heartfelt gratitude to all who stand with Ukraine, affirming that their support in defending freedom is a beacon of hope for future generations.
In addition to the fundraising effort, the evening featured the historic screening of the film “Bucha,” directed by Oleksandr Shchur and Stanislaw Tiunov. This film, shown for the first time in West Africa, portrays the tragic events in Bucha, Ukraine—a symbol of mass murder, brutality, and the stark realities of Russia’s invasion.
“‘Bucha’ tells a powerful story of resilience and reminds us of the humanity, solidarity, and hope that endure in the face of horror,” the Ambassador stated. He also noted that Russia’s neo-imperial actions extend beyond Ukraine, as similar tactics of manipulation and violence are evident in Africa.
“The methods are identical: to steal, destroy, and spread disinformation and instability. This is why it is crucial to expose the true face of Russian neo-colonialism here in Africa,” he concluded.
The event marked a significant step in rallying support for Ukraine while fostering awareness of the ongoing struggles against manipulation and imperialistic actions both in Eastern Europe and Africa
Also speaking, the newly appointed Honorary Consul of Ukraine in Lagos, Michel Fadi Issa, said “today, we gather not only to express our solidarity with the people of Ukraine, but also to reaffirm our shared commitment to peace, justice, and the sovereignty of nations.
“Ukraine’s story is one of courage, resilience, and unwavering determination. In the face of great adversity, its people have stood firm in defense of their freedom, their identity, and their democratic values.
“Their struggle serves as a powerful reminder to the world that liberty must never be taken for granted.
“As Nigerians and as members of the international community, it is our duty to continue supporting efforts that uphold human rights, safeguard sovereignty, and restore peace and stability in Ukraine and beyond.
“May the courage of the Ukrainian people inspire us all to work together with wisdom, compassion, and unity toward a future built on mutual respect and lasting peace”.
