Ukraine has secured the return of 200 prisoners of war in its latest exchange with Russia, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced on Thursday.
According to the Ukrainian leader, the group includes soldiers who were captured during Russia’s siege of Mariupol in the early months of the 2022 invasion.
Announcing the development on X (formerly Twitter), Zelenskiy described the exchange as another step in Ukraine’s continued efforts to bring home all citizens held in captivity.
“Every time our people come home, it proves that Ukraine is working to bring everyone back. No one is forgotten,” he said.
Zelenskiy also acknowledged the role of international mediators in facilitating the exchange, expressing appreciation to countries and partners involved in the negotiations.
“I am grateful to everyone who helps Ukraine. I thank the United States for its support in making this exchange possible,” he added.
The latest swap marks another humanitarian breakthrough amid the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, with both sides periodically negotiating prisoner exchanges through international mediation.
