The Uganda Cranes may have exited early from the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Morocco, but all is not lost for the tourism sector.
A delegation from the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), led by Martin Mugarra, the state minister of Tourism, is continuing its mission in Morocco to put Uganda firmly on the map for North African travellers.
Their goal is to build excitement and visibility ahead of the nation co-hosting Afcon 2027. Over the past two weeks, the UTB team, coordinated by Francis Nyende, UTB marketing manager and Simplicious Gessa, UTB head of public relations, has been meeting top Moroccan media outlets, from major newspapers like Al Bayane and Le Matin to national broadcaster SNRT Television.

In every engagement, they are sharing the story of Uganda; its incredible wildlife, rich culture and growing appeal for both adventure and business tourism. Backed by the government’s commitment to tourism development, the meetings are laying a strong foundation for lasting connections between Uganda and North Africa.
Building Buzz for 2027
The real highlight of the tour so far was the “Ugandan Night” at Rabat’s Villa Soraya on December 28, 2025. Despite a chilly day in the Moroccan capital, the warmth inside was undeniable, from a cozy fireplace to the vibrant atmosphere created by Ugandan music, the aroma of local coffee as well as displays of traditional crafts.

Jointly organized by UTB, the ministry of Tourism and Fufa, the event was a masterclass in “football diplomacy.” It drew not just Ugandans living abroad, but guests from South Sudan, Rwanda, Botswana, the UK and Morocco itself.
After introductions and the national anthem, Mugarra thanked Fufa for their successful 2027 Afcon bid and UTB for bringing a taste of Uganda to Morocco.
On his part, Moses Magogo, the Fufa president, made a passionate appeal, inviting everyone to visit “the Garden of Eden in East Africa.” The night unfolded with a dinner, dancing and prizes, all under the banner of “Explore Uganda.”
For everyone involved, it was a successful and memorable step in showcasing Uganda to North Africa, building invaluable momentum for the 2027 Afcon tournament to be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.
