The Uganda U17 national football team, the Cubs, have made history by qualifying for the knockout stage of the FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar for the first time.
Uganda secured their spot among the last 32 teams with a hard-fought 1-0 win over France in their final group match at Aspire Zone Pitch 3 in Al Rayyan. The key moment came in the 18th minute when team captain Hamza Ssengooba made a smart cut-back to find James Bogere, who calmly slotted the ball past the French goalkeeper for the lead.
The play started with Elvis Torach, whose impressive run down the right flank created the perfect chance for the goal. Head coach Brian Ssenyondo’s team entered the match knowing only a win would keep their World Cup dreams alive, and the players delivered with determination and composure.
After taking the lead, Uganda demonstrated strong defense, enduring heavy pressure from France but holding firm until the final whistle. This win means Uganda finished third in Group K with four points, equal with France and Canada but behind on goal difference.
Despite this, the Cubs advanced to the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams, achieving something remarkable in their first appearance at the global tournament. The journey has been one of hard work and steady improvement.
The Cubs began their campaign with a narrow 2-1 loss to Canada, then drew 1-1 with Chile before stepping up against France. FUFA president Eng Moses Magogo celebrated the moment.
“The Uganda Cubs are flying our flag high in Qatar at the grand stage of the FIFA U17 World Cup. It’s a proud moment for the country and a historical moment for the boys and country.” Uganda will now face Switzerland, who topped Group F with seven points.
