The United States has reportedly warned that it could suspend weapons and intelligence support to Ukraine unless Kyiv signs former President Donald Trump’s peace proposal by next Thursday.
According to sources, Washington is applying unprecedented pressure on Ukraine to accept Trump’s 28-point plan, which is widely seen as favouring Russia. “They want to stop the war and want Ukraine to pay the price,” one source told Reuters.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday that he would use the plan as a framework for negotiations with Russia but stressed that Kyiv’s red lines must not be crossed in any peace deal.
On Friday, Zelensky held discussions with European leaders, including UK Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron. While they welcomed US efforts to advance peace, they emphasized the need for a “just and lasting” resolution that safeguards Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Trump’s peace plan reportedly offers Moscow greater Ukrainian territory than it currently controls and includes Russia’s readmission to the G7, raising concerns in Kyiv and among Western allies.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin said it had not yet received the plan but insisted that Zelensky must negotiate “now” or risk losing additional territory.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated: “The effective work of the Russian armed forces should convince Zelensky: it is better to negotiate and do it now rather than later.”
