Amid escalating attacks on Christians in Nigeria, United States President, Donald Trump has cautioned that the United States may reduce aid unless the government takes stronger measures to protect religious communities.
Speaking on Thursday, Trump highlighted the alleged targeting of Christian populations and warned that continued violence could prompt a review of U.S. financial and security support to Nigeria.
He criticized what he described as insufficient action by Nigerian authorities to curb attacks by militant groups, stressing that aid decisions would now factor in the country’s response to protecting vulnerable communities.
Trump’s statement follows Nigeria’s recent redesignation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), a move tied to religious freedom violations. Trump emphasized that the U.S. is closely monitoring the situation and will hold Nigerian leaders accountable for ensuring the safety of all citizens, regardless of faith.
The Nigerian government, however, has rejected claims of religious bias, reiterating that its security forces are committed to safeguarding all communities and that violence in the country is driven by terrorism and banditry, not religion.
