The United States Mission in Nigeria has expressed deep condolences over the passing of Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, whose courageous actions saved the lives of over 200 Christians during a violent attack in Barkin Ladi.
In a statement on Tuesday, the U.S. Mission lauded the late cleric’s bravery and lifelong dedication to religious tolerance and interfaith harmony. According to the U.S. Department of State, Imam Abdullahi’s actions during the 2018 Barkin Ladi attacks prevented a potentially far deadlier outcome and set a lasting example of courage and humanity.
“Imam Abdullahi was a fearless advocate for religious tolerance whose actions strengthened interfaith understanding,” the statement read. “His legacy of peace and compassion will continue to inspire Nigerians and Americans alike”.
The cleric was formally recognized in 2019 with the International Religious Freedom Award by the United States, honoring his intervention to shelter Christians fleeing armed assailants during the Barkin Ladi crisis.
The U.S. Mission emphasized that Imam Abdullahi’s commitment to peace and community outreach extended beyond that single event, highlighting his continuous efforts to foster understanding, unity and cooperation across religious communities.
“Through his leadership, countless individuals were inspired toward moral uprightness and harmony”, the statement added, celebrating his enduring influence on interfaith relations.
