President Donald Trump has directed the Justice Department to launch an investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s relationships with major financial institutions and high-profile political figures — a request swiftly endorsed by Attorney General Pam Bondi.
The move came days after the House Oversight Committee released Epstein’s emails, which referenced individuals from both political parties, including Trump himself. Yet in his statement, the president singled out only Democratic figures.
In a lengthy post on Truth Social, Trump accused Democrats of weaponizing the “Epstein Hoax” to deflect from what he called their “disastrous SHUTDOWN” and other failures.
“I will be asking A.G. Pam Bondi, and the Department of Justice, together with our great patriots at the FBI, to investigate Jeffrey Epstein’s involvement and relationship with Bill Clinton, Larry Summers, Reid Hoffman, J.P. Morgan, Chase, and many other people and institutions,” Trump wrote, claiming the situation pointed toward another “Russia, Russia, Russia Scam.”
Bondi responded hours later on X, announcing she had assigned the investigation to Jay Clayton, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York.
Clayton, she wrote, “is one of the most capable and trusted prosecutors in the country, and I’ve asked him to take the lead. As with all matters, the Department will pursue this with urgency and integrity to deliver answers to the American people.”
A spokesperson for former President Bill Clinton pushed back strongly, saying the newly released emails “prove Bill Clinton did nothing and knew nothing.” “The rest is noise meant to distract from election losses, backfiring shutdowns, and who knows what else,” the spokesperson added.
NBC News has contacted representatives for Reid Hoffman, Larry Summers, and JPMorgan Chase. None of the individuals named by Trump has been accused of wrongdoing in the Epstein sex-trafficking case.
Epstein, who died in custody in 2019, had been charged with sexually abusing numerous underage girls at his properties in New York and Palm Beach.
Many of the high-profile figures whose names surfaced in his emails — including Clinton, Summers, and Hoffman — have publicly expressed regret over ever associating with him.
