Two Rivers State House of Assembly members have withdrawn their backing for the ongoing impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy.
Sylvanus Nwankwo, Minority Leader and representative of Omuma Constituency, and Peter Abbey, representing Degema Constituency, made the announcement during a press conference in Port Harcourt on Monday. They urged their colleagues in the Assembly to reconsider the impeachment proceedings.
According to the lawmakers, their decision followed appeals from “elders and leaders” within and outside the state, who called for restraint and a more conciliatory approach.
“Rivers State issued a notice of impeachment on Governor Fubara and his Deputy. We appeal to our fellow colleagues to temper justice with mercy and explore ways to resolve this matter without resorting to impeachment,” they said.
“After listening to the numerous appeals from our elders and leaders, we are requesting that our colleagues reconsider the impeachment move and seek an amicable solution, even though the governor and his deputy are alleged to have infringed on the Constitution,” they added.
Governor Fubara and his deputy were served with an impeachment notice last Thursday over allegations of gross misconduct, sparking a heated debate within the state’s political circles.
