Two Russian police officers were killed in an overnight explosion in Moscow while attempting to stop a suspicious individual, the country’s Investigative Committee confirmed Wednesday.
According to the statement, “an explosive device was triggered” as the officers approached the suspect near their service vehicle.
The incident occurred close to the site where Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was killed earlier this week by a bomb placed under his parked car. Sarvarov had led the Russian General Staff’s training department.
The Investigative Committee, which handles major crimes, said forensic teams were examining the scene, conducting both medical and explosive analyses.
Images broadcast on Russian television showed the area cordoned off with a heavy police presence, and witnesses reported that the blast occurred at approximately 1:30 am local time (2230 GMT Tuesday).
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Kyiv has been blamed for several attacks targeting Russian military officials and pro-Kremlin figures within Russia and in occupied territories. While Kyiv has claimed responsibility for some previous incidents, it has not commented on Monday’s explosion.
The latest attack underscores the ongoing security challenges in Moscow and highlights a continued pattern of targeted strikes against high-ranking officials and law enforcement personnel.
