Labour congress urges governments to ease economic pressure on workers ahead of 2027 minimum wage rollout
The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has expressed concern over the worsening cost-of-living crisis in the country, calling on governments at all levels to urgently increase workers’ allowances to help cushion the impact of rising inflation.
The call was made in a statement released on Monday and jointly signed by TUC President, Festus Osifo, and General Secretary, Nuhu Toro, in which the labour body advocated an expanded social welfare package for Nigerian workers.
According to the TUC, economic conditions remain extremely challenging for workers as the country enters 2026, with inflation and rising prices continuing to erode purchasing power.
“As we step into 2026, Congress remains deeply concerned about the harsh economic realities confronting workers,” the statement said.
The congress urged federal, state, and local governments to review and enhance existing allowances as an immediate relief measure, pending the full implementation of a new National Minimum Wage in 2027, in line with prevailing labour laws.
The TUC stressed that workers should not be made to bear the brunt of ongoing economic reforms without adequate protection and support from the government.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to engaging with government authorities and employers of labour to push for policies that prioritise workers’ welfare and improve living standards across the country.
In addition, the labour centre called on workers nationwide to remain united and resolute, describing unity as a critical strength in advancing labour rights and national development.
“Unity remains our greatest strength. As we move into 2026, we must do so with renewed resolve, stronger solidarity, and unwavering commitment to the ideals that bind us together,” the statement added.
The TUC concluded by pledging to continue building a labour movement that firmly represents the interests of workers while contributing to Nigeria’s overall progress.
